INDEX

[119] Thomas TEMPLE was born in 1694 in Coombs Lane, Wiltshire, England. (1) He died in 1775 in Pennsylvania. We are not sure how Thomas Temple got to America, but he appears in Goshen, Pennsylvania, in 1721, at the age of 27.("Kings Mountain Men") He is the third child of William Temple & Susannah Carrington.

Brothers William Temple bp 1686 Atworth parish, Wiltshire, England
m Hannah Taylor and Thomas Temple bp or b 1700 Atworth parish,
m Mary Jefferis. They are said to have come to PA c1714 and the Wiltshire
database of immigrants appears to support the time frame (if this is our
Thomas; no William shown?):

Names Thomas Temple

What town or village they emigrated from Malmesbury
Date of emigration 21st March 1713

Their stepmother is said to have sent them to America while their father
was away on business in Ireland, so that her children would inherit.
They had one other sister (who lived) by the name of Susanna b 1683,
who by all appearances remained in England.

[120] Major TEMPLE (3) was born in 1736 in Chester County, PA.(4) He died about 1816 in Greene County, TN.(5)
Major Temple moved to Mecklenburg County, NC (1766). In 1780, he was with North Carolina forces in the celebrated battle of King's Mountain. The family says he carved his initials in the musket he carried in that battle. That weapon has been handed down from generation to generation and is known as "Old Kings Mountain."
In 1786, he moved to Green County, Tennessee, where he selected a farm on Richland Creek. Both his farm an that of his neighbor (Rev. Hezekiah Balch, who went on to found Greenville College) were recorded at the same time. They were probably friends and came to Tennessee together. Both were active Presbyterians. Major Temple was an Elder in the Church. He became a major landowner.
In 1797, Major Temple was appointed to lay out and govern the town of Greeneville, Tenn. His son John was also a commissioner.
We believe Major Temple had five sons and a daughter. His will, dated 8 Aug 1816, names all six children.
He was married to Mary KENNEDY.(6) Mary KENNEDY died about 1820 in Greene County, TN. She was born in Pennsylvania. Major TEMPLE and Mary KENNEDY had the following children:
