INDEX

[126] The Temple family fortune was based on sheep farming, they were first recorded as such at Witney in Oxfordshire. Later from 1546 they had been renting a sheep farm in Burton Dassett in Warwickshire. The Stowe estate was leased from 1571 by Peter Temple, his son John Temple bought the manor & estate of Stowe in 1589 and it became the home of the Temple family. In the late 17th century, the house was completely rebuilt by Sir Richard Temple, 3rd Baronet c.1683 on the present site

[123] Thomas Temple of Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England left a will 1594 in which he mentions wife Agnes and ten children - not named. Just from this alone there could be a lot of Temples running around Wiltshire in the 1600s.

The Temple name is generally Anglo-Saxon and most likely to have originated from a family that lived close to the Temple. The name is first found in Cheshire, and are said to be tied to Loefric, the Saxon Earl of Chester, who died in 1057, before the Conquest.

Sir Thomas Temple, 1st Baronet (9 January 1567 - c. 1637), was an English landowner and Member of Parliament.

Early life

Temple was born at Burton Dassett in Warwickshire, the eldest son of John Temple and Susan (née Spencer). As a child he moved with his father to Stowe House in Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Oxford University and Lincoln's Inn.

Marriage

He married Hester Sandys and as a result of the influence of his father in law, he was elected MP for Andover, Hampshire in 1590. Sir Thomas and Hester had thirteen children, including Martha who married Thomas Penistone in 1611. He was the step-son of Sir Thomas' brother, Sir Alexander Temple. Martha was described as "a dainte fine lady”. Martha died of smallpox in January 1620 and she was buriedin the Temple’s parish church at Stowe. Her father built a magnificent marble monument to her that can still be seen in the “Penyston chapel” in Stowe church.

Honours and Offices

He was knighted by James I in 1603 and purchased a baronetcy in 1611. In 1606, Thomas served as sheriff of Oxfordshire; he was sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1616 and of Warwickshire in 1620.
